Wifi resourcesDear microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless Group members,
Just wanted to indicate that we seem to be running out of discussions in this group as there is always an answer under ezlan.net. I have been to the website and seems fine but there are thousands of other resources on the net and I do not see the reason of limiting all references to ezlan.net unless is something to do with search engine ranking improvement. I of course appreciate the work of Mr. Jack (MVP-Networking) but thats what I have noticed and felt that it is important to express to the group members. Thanks. -aljuhani Hi,
One reason for this is that since wireless networking is a big broad topic and it is hard to explain the features especially the setup features to a person who has never seen a wireless network. This is true for people outside of the USA and aplenty in Asia where i live. So unless a user who goes for a wireless network or a wireless router will be overwhelmed at the complexity at the set up features needed for either a stand alone laptop or a wireless network and the only best way is by trial and error. If you can get to visualise how a wireless router is setup or how a wireless network is configured on a laptop then you will be seeing a lot of things including the troubleshooting stages. And in fact it is never documented except in ezlan.net In fact I had experienced wireless networking during MS Events with the MS evangelists who attend those events at 5-star hotels before going for a wireless network and I must say that it is pretty tough to troubleshoot these kind of problems unless you have an overview of what is going on and why. (snippage) Malke Hi
After spending time on many public forums I noticed that certain questions are repeating quite often, so instead of keep typing the same answers I came up with the EZLAN.NET idea. As an example, most current laptops come with both wire and wireless Network Cards. End-users wanted to know if it possible to set preference to decide automatically which connection should be used first in the presence of both wire and wireless (like use the wire first when it plugged in the Office, and default to Wireless at home). The answer is Metrics, however if the end-user does not know that, how he/she is going to look for it. At the time, the I noticed that, the question kept coming in many forums on a daily basis. There were many sources concerning Metrics on the Internet. However, these pages did not make the direct connection to what the users were looking for, and they are written in a way that makes it hard to End-Users to understand how specifically it set in Windows XP. Therefore, I published a simple page explaining the choices and how to set it ( http://www.ezlan.net/metrics.html ). Naturally, when I come across a question concerning Network's connection preference I link to the metrics page on EZLAN.NET (the same rational applies to most of the pages on EZLAN.NET). If you type "Configuring Metrics" into a MSN Search, or Google, EZLAN.NET comes first, that has nothing to do with me (I do not think that I linked to the page more than 20 or 30 times), it just shows the current popularity of this topic To the best of my recollection, I never issued a patent on using this approach ;) other people (and Microsoft MVPs) do something similar. May be you would like to give it a try too. As for your comment "something to do with search engine ranking improvement". I hope that you noticed that EZLAN.NET does have any commercial aspects (Not even the ""obligatory"" ;) Ad Sense). I DO NOT have any financial benefits from the Site, (actually the more traffic the more it costs me). In my main profession I am a specialist in NeuroRehabilitation, I have No income associated with my computer related Internet activities. Jack (MVP-Networking). P.S. If you have few pages that follow the same rational, I would be glad to publish them and give you the credit. I had to disconnect from the wirelss manually. Luckily, my Sony has a switch to just turn off the wireless. Patty Hi
Metrics settings does not switch Off the second connection it just establish the preferred connection. Jack (MVP-Networking). If you have one Network, they are connected but both are Not really Active . Only one connection to same Network can be maintained, and the metrics established which one would be the default connection.. You might not need this feature but other do. Jack (MVP-Networking). how the request is routed (which card the request is sent out on) So yes both cards get IP addresses and both cards maybe connected to two very different networks, but the metrics determine which card the computer sends request through. In effect plugging or unplugging your cards as needed. -- Show quoteHide quoteDavid Hettel Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. In effect plugging or unplugging your cards as needed. icons in the taskbar flashed each time something was sent across the network. If one was default or the one being used, then why did both react and flash? Wouldn't just the one that was "active" from the metrics setting react? If I physically unplugged the card, then the icon would not flash or react to something being sent across the network, would it? I'm just trying to understand how this all works. Thanks! Patty I believe that the purpose here for most users is to get answers that work
IMHO ezlan.net does just that, that's why I have included links to it. And I hope Jack doesn't mind. I try to give the clearest link I can find, often that is ezlan.net. You are free to post different answers, or links to other sites if you believe they will help. There are generally a number of different ways to accomplish any given task in Windows, for most new users having twenty different paths or way to get where they are going isn't helpful, just confusing. At least that has been my experience. Nor does it help the new user half way down a path to a solution, to be given directions to finish a path they are not on. -- Show quoteHide quoteDavid Hettel Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
