Windows XP Firewall Setup

This should be easy, but I have not been able to find the answer, yet.

I am trying to share files with another computer on my home network.

For illustration purposes, I wll use PC-1 and PC-2 as the computer names.

PC-1 has ZoneAlarm, a very nice, easy to understand and configure firewall

PC-2 has XP firewall.

PC-2 can see the shared files on PC-1, no problem

PC-1 can NOT see the shared files on PC-2 as long as PC-2 has the XP
firewall on.

When I disable the XP firewall on PC-2, PC-1 can see the shares on PC-2.

I have not been able to figure out how to enable the subnet for the XP
Firewall on PC-2.

Surely, someone out there knows how to do this.

I searched the newsgroup, but was unble to find an answer to my specific
problem.

Doug Sherman [MVP]

If you are SP2, simply enable an exception for File and Printer Sharing.
The default scope is the local subnet. If you are pre-SP2, you will have to
open ports.

Thanks, that worked.

I was a confused about it, since you must set exceptions for every kind of
service. That's kind of lousy, except that I only had to set the exception
for File and Printer sharing.

It would be nice if you could set one exception rule for all the services
and exclude services from the exception, if you want.

Also, I have SP2, so I did not have to open any new ports.

I don't know anything about opening ports, so, for our SP1 brethren, perhaps
you could share with us how this is done.

You would need to open UDP and TCP ports 445, and 135 to 139. This tells
you how:
