I have 2pcs wired to a linksys wifi broadband router and a laptop on wifi on
the router.
I share files etc between all three using a network using static ip
addresses.
The network workgroup name is aaaaa.
To get the laptop to join the network I have had to create a wireless
network but to make it work I have to make the SSID on the router aaaaa.
It all works ok like this.

Here's the question
Is it possible to make the SSID a different name but still allow all 3 to be
on the same network sharing files etc or do I have to call both the wired
and wireless networks the same name?

is there another way to do it or am I stuck with it like this?

many thanks for taking time to read this

The SSID is different than the Workgroup name, all computers should have the
same workgroup name to see each other. The SSID does not need to be the same
as the workgroup name, but computers in the wireless part of the network
will need the same workgroup name to see the other computers.

SSID has no meaning with respect to wired computers. All your wireless
computers and router on the LAN must have the same SSID. Workgroup name is
different and separate from SSID.
