Wireless setupI have a laptop that accesses the internet via dsl (verizon modem), netgear
router. I have wireless (WEP) set up on this laptop. I would like to setup my son's laptop to be able to access the internet using my network internet connection. My son's laptop has a wireless card also. How can I do this? I thought that I all I had to do was to connect to my wireless connection with my key from his laptop. I tried to setup my son's computer to be able to access my network (using my key). His computer can view and connect to my network, but I get a message that there is limited or no connectivity and he can't access the internet. What is the best and simplest way to set him up to access the internet? Does his wireless have to be set up using WEP if mine is? -- Shannon Hi
His wireless has to be set up like yours in order to connect. If using the WEP passphrase doe not work, log with your computer to the Routers WEP setting and copy the actual WEP Hex String. Type this Hex string to the security menu on you son/ wireless settings. Jack (MVP-Networking). If I remove WEP and have no security on my router, my son can connect. If I put the WEP back in place on my router, my son can't connect and we get a 'limited or no connectivity' message. -- Show quoteHide quoteShannon "Jack (MVP-Networking)." wrote: > Hi > His wireless has to be set up like yours in order to connect. > If using the WEP passphrase doe not work, log with your computer to the > Routers WEP setting and copy the actual WEP Hex String. > Type this Hex string to the security menu on you son/ wireless settings. > Jack (MVP-Networking). > > "svanhoo1" <svanh***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:E4682637-CB37-4D30-863A-73238F45BAD9@microsoft.com... > >I have a laptop that accesses the internet via dsl (verizon modem), netgear > > router. In most cases that is a result of a mistake in the Hex string key. When not using the same hardware, some times, using the same passphrase would result in a different key, make sure that you copy the actual HEX string from the Router instead of using the Password (passphrase). Otherwise leave the WEP Off and use MAC filtering. MAC filtering is not very secure, but you can compensate for the duration that your son is in by using static IPs and disabling the DHCP. When your son leaves, retrun the setting to your regualr configuration.. Wireless Security - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Security.html Jack (MVP-Networking).
