XP login changed to NT!All seemed to be going well, I could "ping" the wireless printer and laptop from the desktop which is wired to the router. However, in [network connections] there weren't any icons for other equipment on the local area connection. Working through the Help and Support Center... Networking and the web... Networking... Network components... Add a network component... appeared to be the solution, after reading carefully I followed the instructions on the desktop PC "- If this is a local area connection, click Install.". Point 4 then should have been to Add either Client, Service, or Protocol. I never got that far! the system rebooted and came up with a black screen and small login box in the centre (NT I assume). The desktop PC is/was running XP pro sp2 I can login and get to the XP accounts which appears to operate in the same way apart from unable to switch user without logout/in through above mentioned screen. I have tried system restore - unable to restore from 3 different previous points. Checked system info... software environment... environment variables shows: OS Windows NT various lines similar to... TEMP %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM ...amongst other things. This doesn't mean a lot to me at the moment, but looks like it may be relevant. Checked winhlp.com and these forums but can't find any advice on why this happened or how to reinstate XP as it was. Any advice appreciated. Don't worry, WinXP uses the old style logon dialog
in some circumstances. It is not broken. --PA Show quoteHide quote "Mike (uk)" wrote: > I've recently set up a network at home through a router/ap. > All seemed to be going well, I could "ping" the wireless printer and laptop > from the desktop which is wired to the router. network and shared with 4 people, so the fast user switching is a function that was very useful and I would prefer to reinstate if possible. Should I be posting this on a different group? logon! All is back in appearance and function as before, still would like to understand what happened at system level and if there are more corrections required after simply following windows "help" instructions.
