When in range of publicly-available WIFI service, on my computer running
XP-Home, I can simply click on my Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
icons and I'm in business.

On my new computer running XP-Media Center, that doesn't work.  OE says "The
host 'peoplepc.com' could not be found." while IE says "The page cannot be
displayed".

Please tell me what I have to do to access PeoplePC using a public WIFI
connection.

Thanx.

Have you tried enabling (ie. checking) the "Automatically connect to
non-preferred networks" checkbox?

All my connections are automatic .  Couldn't find anything about
non-preferred nets.  But don't think it matters.  I'm having no problem
connecting to a WIFI net.  My problem is using IE and OE when I'm on a net.
I'm pretty sure my browsers and email handlers are set up the same on both
coomputers but what works on the old won't work on the new.

Peoplepc.com is an ISP (and as far as I know not free) - evidently your new
computer is not set-up to use the ISP.

Sure it is.  Dialup works fine.  I'm on it now.  Any more suggestions?

setup your Internet Explorer to connect through a     LAN and disable the
dialup.
with wifi it is a LAN connection.
also make sure the router is logged onto your isp.

I'm not sure what you mean by "setup your IE to connect through a LAN..."
and, as for the router being logged onto my sip, the router is part of the
WIFI net.  I have no router in that net.
My problem is accessing my email handler and my browser home page once I'm
on the net. Any more suggestions?

john, you're not accessing PeoplePC when you use a public wi-fi spot.
whoever is providing the internet on-ramp for the hot-spot is the ISP.
and it could very well be that on-ramp (net connection) is down.  that
would explain why you can connect the the access point but no farther.
do you know where this public hot spot is originating from?  if so you
might trundle on down there and ask.  i've run across a few public
spots with the same results and in each case a word with the manager
resulted in a boot of his server which resulted in a restored
connection to the net.

a second thought.  there are SOME apparently public hot spots which
actually require a login ID.  the states of iowa and texas have public
wi-fi at their highway rest stops but registration is required.  what
happens when you open IE?  if the hot spot requires registration you
should get the provider's login info.  until you register your browser
and e-mail software will not work.

a third thought.  try this.  click TOOLS:INTERNET OPTIONS:CONNECTIONS.
then click NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION.  then in the PROGRAMS tab at the
top of the box be sure that OUTLOOK EXPRESS is shown in the E-MAIL
window.  now try the hot spot and see if it works.  if it does you're
in business.  all you'll need to do is create a dialing script when
for those times you want to dial into PeoplePC.  if not, well, then
i'm out of ideas for the moment.

Hi Rich:

Thanks for your suggestions.  However, they don't solve my problem.

I'm in an area where wifi is available most of the time.  When it's not up,
I either try again later or go online with dialup.  There is one thing I
must stress: I ACCESS BOTH MY EMAIL HANDLER (PEOPLEPC.COM) AND MY IE HOME
PAGE (MY.YAHOO.COM) THRU THE SAME WIFI CONNECTION FROM MY LAPTOP WITH NO
PROBLEMS.  As a matter of fact, I did nothing to set it up.  I simply select
the net from those available in my area and hit the IE and OE icons.

When I do the same thing on my desktop, it doesn't work - the WIFI ISP
processes my request but SOMETHING prevents it from accessing the desired
URL's.  My real question is:  What is this SOMETHING and how do I get around
it.

I suspect it has to do with security and the more I think about it, I think
it has nothing to do with PeoplePC because PPC should have no involvement
with my home page access.

Thanks for pointing out that it's the WIFI ISP which handles my requests.
That helps me understand WIFI better.

I'm now off to search for security solutions or better yet I'll call D-Link
support, my network card supplier.  Naturally, COMPAQ support won't touch
this because the card didn't come with the computer.

Thanks again.

John

Jack (MVP-Networking).
Hi

Peopl PC does not have any free public Hotpots, it is a discounted dialup
ISP.

If one connects through broadband to peoplepc.com

You get this page,
http://www.peoplepc.com/opt/PPC_PricePionts_AB_CSICode.html

Whether you can access from there your peoplepc email account you have to
ask the peoplepc support.

However, it is possible that you are calling “publicly-available WIFI
services”.  Are actually private Wireless connections that are not using
security filters?  If it is so, you should know that you are running your
own traffic through some one else connection, it can be intercepted and your
privacy can be compromised.

In addition, in many places it is illegal to use some else connection even
if it is unprotected.

Jack (MVP-Networking).
