Can't Use WPA in Ad Hoc, only WEP...??? Help Please

Inspiron 6000, XP Pro, with Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection.
Drivers and software just updated.

I have successfully established an Ad Hoc wireless network between my
computer and my wife's, for print and file sharing.  Works fine.... BUT it
seems that XP only allows WEP data encription for Ad Hoc.

When I 'Add' a new Network, and then on the Association tab, once I check
the lower left box "..this is an ad hoc network...", the only options under
Network Authentication are Open or Shared, and the only options under Data
Encription are Disabled or WEP.

No way can I find how to set my ad hoc to any of the WPA settings that are
available IF I am setting up an Infrastructure network (and thus do not check
the 'ad hoc' box)

Can anyone guide me as to how to improve my security with WPA for ad hoc?

Yes. Vista allows ad-hoc with  WPA2.

The WZC does not seem to allow WPA for ad -hoc.
OEM utilities like PROset can do this.

Hi

Most current Wireless Hardware cannot do WPA in Ad-Hoc mode.

If security is very important, configure regular infra structure Wireless
system, it might cost you about $30-$40 for additional hardware.

There are Wireless Routers that can do WPA+AES for less then $40.

Is additional security is worth this kind of money? It is your call. ;)

Thanks, Jack,
It's been tough to verify that XP was locked into WEP for ad hoc.  Thanks
for the verification.  As an old geezer of 66 traveling around a good bit in
an RV with computers, it's tough to keep up to date on what's happening.
No, I probably wouldn't spend the extra money now for WPA, but if WPA was
current included in Ad Hoc, considering all the hackers around, I would avail
my self of it.
Knowing that, i will be very careful of what files I made available for
sharing.

Interesting that Pavel A. said that Proset CAN provide WPA.  considering
that I have a built in Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG netwoprk connection, maybe I
can do something in that direction, instead of using the Window client set up.

Hi

When it comes to Wireless, there is a "triangle" of Hardware Manufacturer
original software, and Windows.

The manufacturer can do with his utility whatever the heck he wants do
including deviations from standards.  The Windows Utility had to be designed
as a general wireless utility that can work with large variety of Hardware.

So according to what Pavel posted you can switch off Windows Zero
Configuration install the Intel manger and try to configure the connection
with it.

This page would help in switching WZC on or Off as necessary.

Again, thanks Jack!
I'm familiar in turning WZC on and off and have a saved page on my desktop
for help.  As it happend the Intel Proset has a built in choice to use WZC or
Proset, so at least they make it easy to switch back and forth.
But to the topic, it is interesting that the Proset had the same
restrictions as WZC, and I just downloaded the latest
driver/software/instructions from Intell in the last week... Nothing other
than WEP for Ad Hoc.
So, I guess I'll be patient.  Pavel says Vista corrects the defficiency, and
I'll eventually have that.
I do have a spare router from a couple of years ago that i could set up...
just have to adapt from the Printer USB to the router..., but then that's
more power consumption and wires in my RV.  My solar can handle it but I
think I'll sit tight for now.
Thanks to you and Pavel for you help and advice  ;-)))
