wireless USB card setupMy dad has XP, and is trying to set it up for wireless. He got hold of a
wireless USB card, but in attempting to run the wizard, when it gets to the part where it asks you to insert the card into a USB port so it can put the system info in it, it says it is trying to load the info using drive A: which is of course his floppy drive. The pull-down it offers to let you change the drive letter only has A, nothing else. I had him install SP2, same result. The drive letter comes up in the wizard before the USB card is inserted. He put a floppy into the drive to see what it would do, and it loaded the info onto the floppy, and was happy. Didn't help the USB card, of course. So how can I get the wizard to redirect the card load to the USB port? I have ME at home, so can only do so much via phone. Thanks! Hmm It really sounds like he is running the wrong program. From your post
it's hard to tell just what you and your father are attempting to do. Are you trying to install drivers for your wireless card, or write wireless info to a USB thumb drive so you can transfer it to your Wireless router and or other computers in the network? -- Show quoteHide quoteDavid Hettel Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. In most cases you do not run a wizard, you insert first the USB card in, the computer would detect a new USB card and would ask for the Drivers, you choose to install from a specific address and you maneuver or the menus to place were the Drivers reside in. Some devices want you to run first a program that installs the drivers and or other related utility, in such a case, if the installation was done correctly (may be a reboot is needed) the computer would detected the drivers by itself. However from your description it seems like you are running Windows utility that can store the existing Wireless information on a USB Flash drive in order to use it elsewhere. It is Not the proper thing to run for new Wireless Card installation. Jack (MVP-Networking). Apparently he had already loaded the drivers from CD. When I had him plug the USB card in, it doesn't detect new hardware, but he said "it did do that once". I'll probably have him try it again, or I may just wait until we go visit at Christmas and do it myself. I know everyone makes fun of phone tech support, but it's been harder to do than it probably should be. Thanks again.
