We recently installed a new Westel  DSL modem/router in our LAN, and for some
reason, I am no longer able to connect to our printer when I am connected
wireless (I used to be able).  Other computers in the office do not have that
problem.  When I connect directly to the router, I CAN open the printer.

Hi
Without providing accurate information about the topology of the Network,
Hardware, and actual use it is impossible to solve such a problem.
As a long shot guess.  Adding a DSL Modem should not affect the Network.
Adding a second Router (DSL Modem/Router combo) could.
If you have two Routers (whether software, or hardware) a double NAT is
created and the network is separated into two network, or and IP's subnet
confusion.
Depending on your topology one Router might need to be configured as a
Switch if it a wire only Router, or as a Switch
with an access point if it is a Wireless Router.
Here how, http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

There's only 1 router.  There was a problem with the existing modem and
router.  The thing that puzzles me, is that everything works when I'm
directly connected.  When I'm wireless, I can do everything except open the
printer.  I have to assume, then, that it has something to do with a network
setting, specific to wireless.  I was unable to see the printer properties.
I even tried removing the printer, then adding it, but couldn't.  As soon as
I connected the DSL cable to my computer, I as able to add the printer and
use it., but still can't open it when I'm wirless.

Hi
What type of printer, and what it is connected to (computer attached
printer, Network printer)?
What I am Wireless means? All computer Wireless? The Computer with the
printer becomes Wireless?  Wireless Printer server? Laptop that tries to
access stand alone printer, or printer connected to a wired computer? What
is the Wireless source and configuration? Wireless Router? Access Point?
What it is connected to?
You are very familiar with your system. Try to step back and take a look, it
is not possible from your posts to figure out what you specifically have and
how it is connected.

Its a Network printer.  When I say wireless, I am connecting to the Network
via a wireless network card.  I can also connect using the ethernet cable
connected t
o our Router.  Nothing has changed (same computer, same printer), except for
the modem/router, and everything works when I connect via the ethernet cable.

Hi
Hopefully the Network printer is configured with static IP?
I assume that the Wireless computer is working wireless otherwise, and you
can exchange files with other computers through the Wireless.
Do you check that the Printer's IP and the Wireless ' computer IP, and the
IPs are on the same subnet?
Did you try to connect to the printer using UNC.

Bob any chance your experiencing this on an IBM computer? It sounds like a
problem with a Program IBM calls ThinkVantage Access connections.  IBM
notebooks come with software that's suppose to make connections easier, and
also allows one to configure how their computer works based on location.
ThinkVantage will by default disable sharing when connected wirelessly and
enable it when connected by wire. Your computer may have a program like this
that based on how you are connected determines what services are available.

I guess what I was trying to ask, is it possible that when you installed the
new wireless/modem/router you had to "create" a new connection, and this new
connection is configured different than the wired connection? If you are
simply using Windows XP to connect wirelessly then this is unlikely. If the
card is built into your Dell and you are using the Dell software it's a
possibility.

The other option that I see is that the Westel is blocking ports on the
wireless connection that it's not on the wired connection. Basically it's a
security setting somewhere and not a software issues. You can use the
printer when using the wired port, that says to me the software is installed
correctly, you can't when using a wireless connection. So it could be that
you don't have a protocol installed on the wireless that you do on the wire.
Have you gone to Network Connections and right clicked on the icon for your
connection and compared on the properties page what the two devices use?
That everything the wired connection uses, is also listed for the wireless
connection? If these are the same, I believe it will be a setting within the
Westel.
