Incorrect network statusmorning I replaced my Linksys 802.11b router that died with a new Linksys 802.11g (WRT54GS). Everything appears to be working fine and all of my devices can access the Internet. I have two wireless devices, one with a hard coded IP Address and one set to use DHCP. The issue is with the wireless laptop running Windows XP SP2 and DHCP using the internal wireless card. When it boots it connects to the router, obtains the IP Address, and I can connect to the Net. Life is good except in the "Choose a wireless network" window of XP it lists my SSID and states "Disconnected". However the description underneath says I am connected. When I select the my network from the list the "connect" button at the bottom of the screen changes to "disconnect". Everything works except when I execute "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" from the DOS prompt I get an error message stating an address cannot be obtained from media that is disconnected. If I reboot the computer it obtains the address and all is well but still says disconnected. Just curious if anyone has seen this before or if I did something stupid. I kept the same SSID on the router and generated a new WEP key. I entered the WEP key on both devices. Does anyone know why XP displays the Disconnected message? Hi
When you are Connected The button changes to Disconnect, giving you the option to Disconnect when you need it. When you are Disconnected it would say Connect to give you the option to Connect. Thank you for replying. The button is changing as you described but the status in the upper portion of the window is not. In other words when I select the network I am already connected to the button changes to disconnect but the status states I am not connected, Disconnected. Are you perhaps running both Windows WZC and a utility provided by the laptop mfr to manage the wireless NIC? See http://www.ezlan.net/wzc.html -- Lem -- MS-MVP - Networking To the moon and back with 64 Kbits of RAM and 512 Kbits of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer Lem, Thank you for responding. This behavior started with the new
router and I am only using Windows to administer the wireless adapter that is internal to the Dell Latitude D600. While responding to your message I rechecked the Wireless Network listings and oddly enough the status of my wireless network is now shown as "Connected". The laptop has sat for a couple of hours so maybe something got updated. Before posting this issue I rebooted the laptop several times and "refreshed" the Wireless Network list several times so I'm not sure what was happening. I have not rebooted the laptop to see if the behavior is reproducable but will do so and post another message if it does it again but for now everything seems to be working as expected. Thank you again for taking the time to respond. Lem wrote: Show quoteHide quote > Adman wrote: > > I am experiencing a strange issue I hope someone can help with. of the Wireless network is now "Disconnected" but obviously I can connect to the Net. As before when I select my SSID from the list the button changes to "disconnect". I'll do a little more research on-line but since nothing appears to be failing I may file this under nuisances. Adman wrote: Show quoteHide quote > Lem, Thank you for responding.
