Media Center Internet IssuesI just bought a new Gateway PC that has Windows Media Center 2005 on it, and
I can not get my Linksys USB Wireless Adapter to connect. It is not compatible with Media Center as I have been told by their tech support, so do you all know of any solutions I can use to wirelessly connect to my network that are compatible with Media Center? Can you give us more detail on just what is happening or not happening? It
doesn't work might tell you everything, but for me it leaves me guessing. Windows Media Center is windows xp with some advanced networking features disabled. At what point does it fail, do the drivers install? -- Show quoteHide quoteDavid Hettel Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questions addressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups. I tried to install the wireless adapter, and at first it worked, and then it
says: restart your computer to finishinstalling the device I restarted, and then it says "device may not be supported by windows, we recommend you immediately uninstall this device to prevent damage to your system" I tried continuing from there, and then later uninstalled it. I tried every way I could think of, and it just would not allow the adapter to work. I also did some internet research, and other users on the linksys forum talked about installing another driver, because they said very few wireless adapters are supported by 64bit OS's, and there was a driver on the Ralink website they said to use, but it would not install on my computer. I'm currently using a 2nd computer, because I could not find any possible way to connect it to the internet, either wireless or with a wired connection. I would think Media Center would have to be internet accessable, so I'm not sure exactly what is wrong. Is there a certain adapter I need, and if so, what do you recommend if you know of one that is compatible with Windows MC? Windows MCE has no trouble communicating with my Linksys router via an Intel 2000BG adapter. Sorry, I don't know about the Broadcom ethernet device (and probably will never know). You mentioned 64 bit OS. Do you have Windows MCE running in full 64 bit mode? I have heard that Linksys tech support claims not to support their USB wireless adapters for Win XP MCE, but AFAIK, that's because Linksys hasn't fully "certified" their products for MCE. I don't believe that they are are affirmitively saying that the products will not work with MCE. Please post back with more details. What model adapter do you have? What exactly did you do? And what do you mean that "at first it worked"? How did you uninstall it? Finally, what do you mean by "I could not find any possible way to connect it to the internet, either wireless or with a wired connection"? What did you try as a "wired connection" and what happened? Happy New Year. -- Lem -- MS-MVP - Networking To the moon and back with 64 Kbits of RAM and 512 Kbits of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer What i did first, is I plugged it in, and it just asked me the SSID for my
network, and I typed it in, and then I got onto the web, and everything was working. And about 10 minutes later, it says device not recognized etc... like I said in the original post, so I unplugged it, ran the install disk, and then it would not recognize the adapter from then on, even after multiple installs/uninstalls. It is a Linksys WUSB54G wireless adapter. My dad is the one that told me it was a 64bit OS,but I don't know where he got that from. I'm still at a loss for how to connect it. I tried again, and it wants a certain driver, that is not anywhere on the disk, or on the linksys site, but I found it on the Ralink site. How can I make sure its not in 64bit mode, even though I don't think it is? that is rt2500usb.sys I have that on the disk, but when I select it to install that driver, it will not install the driver. I also discovered it is MCE 2002, not 2005. The sticker on the front says 05, but the actual OS is 02, not sure if that helps, but thats as far as I have gotten so far. There is a rt2500usb.sys on the Ralink website, that I tried to download, but it would not work from there either. I'm thinking maybe a different adapter would be better. 2005. So did you attempt to install 64 bit versions of the driver? When you connect with Ethernet cable to the 2WIRE and go to | Start | Run | CMD {Enter} | ipconfig /all {Enter} | what do you get? so I decided to ask the gateway support, and what he said is to get the belkin 802.11g wireless card, and that will connect. Well, I got that today, and I get the same problem I had with the last one in the device manager, that the driver is not recognized by the computer, so it does not function. I installed the driver directly from the cd, so I have no idea why. If its had the exact same problem with two different pieces of hardware, its starting to make me think that the computer may have a problem. You will lose all system changes made since then, but if the only things you have been doing are related to trying to install wireless adapters, that's OK. You also should ensure that your system is malware free. See and follow MVP Malke's advice here: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware From Add/Remove software, uninstall any software relating to the Linksys and Belkin adapters. In Device Manager, uninstall all failed installs and references to either adapter. See http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost If you have a non-USB keyboard, you might also follow the directions here to remove all USB drivers: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575 (If you have a USB keyboard, you might end up having no input device, which would make life pretty difficult for you; I can't remember if that only happens if you remove all USB devices in safe mode or if it happens in normal mode as well; bottom line, if you do not have a PS/2 type keyboard, don't do it). Reboot. I assume that you have a different computer connected to the 2Wire Gateway, probably by USB, and that computer can successfully reach the Internet. Before attempting to install either wireless adapter in your new computer, connect an Ethernet cable from the 2Wire gateway to your new computer. Do not connect the 2Wire to the computer with a USB cable. Can you reach the Internet? If not, go to control panel, network connections. There should be an entry for LAN or Local Area Connection. Right click the LAN connection icon and select Properties. You should see something like this: http://screenshots.modemhelp.net/screenshots/Windows_XP/Network_Connections/Local_Area_Connection/Properties/General/Index.shtml Select the entry for "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the Properties button. Make sure that the radio buttons for "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are selected (http://screenshots.modemhelp.net/screenshots/Windows_XP/Network_Connections/Local_Area_Connection/Properties/General/TCPIP_Properties/General_(Auto_DNS).shtm) OK your way out. If you made any changes to the LAN Connections properties (i.e., to get an IP address automatically), reboot. If you still can not reach the Internet, open a command prompt window, type "ipconfig /all > c:\adamconfig.txt" (without quotes) and press enter. close the command prompt window, go to Start > Run and type "notepad c:\adamconfig.txt" (without quotes) and click the OK button. Copy and paste the info into your next post. If you HAVE been successful in connecting to the Internet with the Ethernet cable, now let's try to get the wireless adapter working. If you can't connect via Ethernet, let's not cloud the issue by attempting to install the adapters. Installing a wireless adapter. The following steps are to install the Linksys WUSB54G. I have read, however, that these adapters are somewhat unreliable, particularly if you have a weak signal. I don't know what Belkin 802.11g wireless card you may have bought, so I can't give you any suggestions about installing that instead of the Linksys adapter. Since you haven't reached this step unless you are able to connect via Ethernet, go to http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Content_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416835852&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper and download the driver for your adapter. Note that Linksys has several different versions of the WUSB54G. Look at the bottom of your adapter for the version number and download the correct driver. DO NOT CONNECT THE USB ADAPTER TO THE COMPUTER YET. Install the downloaded driver and related software. Now connect the adapter to the computer. You should now see the green Linksys Network Monitor icon in your system tray (next to the clock). Right click the icon. Click the entry to "Use Windows XP Wireless Configuration". Disconnect the Ethernet cable. Reboot. Does the adapter find your 2Wire wireless gateway now from the "View available wireless networks" screen? If not, what error messages do you get? Is your wireless network secured (encrypted)? If so, you will need to configure your new computer with the appropriate encryption key. If you still have problems, when you post back, please include the exact text of any error messages you get.
